Each year the Perennial Plant Association chooses a plant
of the year. This year's choice is Hakonechloa
macra 'Aureola',
Golden Variegated Hakone Grass, an intriguing grass for the shade. Variegated but nearly all yellow, the leaf blades have narrow green
stripes, mostly near the margins. It is grown mainly for its beautiful
foliage, although it does produce reddish-pink seed heads. Tiny, inconspicuous flower spikelets appear in airy clusters from late summer thru mid-fall.
The leaves arch in the same direction like a golden waterfall creating a
cascading habit. It spreads slowly but is not invasive.

Coreopsis 'Sienna Sunset' A unique

|
| Coreopsis 'Red Shift'-

sun. |

Tricyrtis hirta
'Blue Wonder' - Toad Lily - Autumn flowering plants whose very exotic starry or bell-shaped flowers are
borne on attractive arching stems. These occur in a wide range of forms
usually spotted with a contrasting color. Preferring a sheltered semi-shaded
site with adequate moisture, they make ideal subjects for the woodland garden
or that shady corner. Star-like blooms spotted with blue and
purple--rather than the reddish hue of other toad lilies--top graceful
18-24" stems. Height: 24" |
| |
|
| Physostegia virginiana
'Miss Manners' - Aptly named because, unlike many other kinds of
obedient plant, this one is clump forming and doesn't spread throughout the
garden. Stiff, square stems end in dense spikes of pure white,
snapdragon-like flowers, which bloom throughout the summer. Grow in full sun
or light shade. Plant in well-drained, consistently moist soil. Does not
tolerate drought so needs to be watered in dry spells. A light summer mulch
helps retain soil moisture and keeps roots cool. |

| Baptisia Twilite
Prairieblues™ - (False Indigo) Baptisia Twilite Prairieblues™ is
a vigorous and strong growing hybrid of Baptisia australis and Baptisia
sphaerocarpa. This new color breakthrough is the result of extensive
breeding efforts at the Chicago Botanical Garden. By the third year, it
produces almost 100 flower spikes of unique deep violet-purple flowers
highlighted by a lemon-yellow keel. Held above the handsome blue-green
foliage, the inflorescences can be up to 32 inches long! |
| |
|
| Hosta 'Blue
Ivory' -
Showy sport of the ever-popular 'Halcyon'. This is a medium sized
hosta with thick, slug resistant foliage. In the spring the leaves display a
wide, creamy white margin and blue center. By the summer, the margins have
brightened to white and the center deepens to blue-green. During the heat of
late summer, a greenish blush may appear over portions of the margin.
Lavender flowers are produced in midsummer |
 |
|
|
| Sedum 'Xenox' - This
sedum starts out purplish-green in the spring but then ages to a rich
reddish-purple in the summer and is topped with rosy-pink flowers in August.
The foliage is unlike any other purple sedum we've grown as it has much more
of a red tone to it. It is somewhat compact growing and the color is most
intense when it is grown under hot and dry conditions. |
